Xay huun u’vîishriheesh nanu’myah – lets us all defend our hearts

The epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) is a critical issue that demands our immediate and sustained attention. The Karuk Tribe is deeply committed to addressing this crisis, which is why we have established the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Program. This initiative is designed to achieve three primary goals: community empowerment, prevention, and effective response.

To realize these objectives, we will provide direct services to the families of those affected by MMIP and to individuals who are most vulnerable within our community. Our approach includes:

  1. Community Empowerment: We will uplift Karuk voices, fostering leadership and advocacy within our community. By providing resources and financial support to Tribal membership who wish to advocate on this issue, we aim to ensure that Karuk perspectives have a seat at the table when our lawmakers are determining solutions.

  2. Prevention and Education: We will conduct educational programs that raise awareness about the MMIP crisis. This includes age-appropriate workshops in schools to educate children on personal safety and resources available to them. Our goal is to empower the younger generation with knowledge and tools to help protect themselves and their peers.

  3. Effective Response: We recognize the importance of direct support for families impacted by this crisis. Our program will include the provision of resources, counseling, and assistance to those affected. Additionally, we will offer free self-defense classes to community members, equipping them with skills to enhance their safety and confidence.

Through these initiatives, we aspire to create a safer and more informed community, where every individual has the knowledge and support necessary to combat the tragic realities of MMIP. Together, we can work towards justice, healing, and empowerment for all.
